Merz made those comments Wednesday, following talks with his coalition partners in Berlin.
“Membership on 1 January 2017 is out of the question. It is not possible”, he added.
Merz noted that any country seeking membership in the EU must first meet the Copenhagen criteria -- a process usually lasting several years.
Meanwhile, he stressed that Ukraine needs a reliable perspective that would pave the way for membership in the long-term plan.
“We can slowly bring Ukraine closer to the European Union along the way. This is always possible, but such a quick membership is simply not feasible”, he added.
Commenting on the outcome of the war with Russia, Merz said he currently has other priorities.
“We are in close contact with US and Ukrainian delegations. We have also drafted the documents together, and it is good that direct talks are currently under way between Ukraine and Russia. We are accompanying these talks with great support and great hope that they will reach a conclusion as soon as possible”, the German Chancellor noted, among other things, reports Telegraph, broadcast Periscope.
Dpa noted that Merz's comments came after his party colleague and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadefhul had said Ukraine deserves a fair chance of joining the EU.
