Greene was best known for his role as Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolfves (1990), directed by Kevin Costner. The role provided him with a nomination for the Oscar Award for Best Supporter Actor, making him one of his greatest professional successes.
Before committing to acting, he worked as a construction technologist and a steel factory, and for a time he was also a member of a rock band. He began his career in theatre in 1970 in Great Britain, and in an interview in 2012, he declared that his foundation in acting is due to theatre.
