The Senate passes Trump's plan to cut the world's US aid worth $9 billion

The United States Senate has approved President Donald Trump's plan for cutbacks worth $9 billion in financing American aid to the world and public broadcasters, giving the republican president another victory. With 51 votes for and 48 against senators passed Trump's request for him [...]

With 51 votes for and 48 against senators passed Trump's request to cut $9 billion worth of spending already approved by Congress.

Most cuts are for programmes that help foreign countries fight disease, wars and natural disasters, but the plan also completely prohibits the $1.1 billion Corporation for Public Broadcasting would receive over the next two years.

Trump and many of the other Republicans argue that public broadcasting expenditures are unnecessary and criticise their news coverage as unilateral, REL reports, broadcast Periscope.

Special funding cancellation packages have not passed for decades, as lawmakers have been reluctant to hand over constitutional control over expenditures. But the Trump republics, who have narrow majority in the Senate and House of Representatives, have shown little desire to oppose his policies since the beginning of the second mandate in January.

The nine billion dollars in question represent a very small amount compared to the federal budget of $6.8 trillion, and there is only a small portion of the funds approved by Congress that Trump administration has held on hold as it targets huge cuts, many of which were ordered by the Department for Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by billionaire Elon Musk.

According to democratic lawmakers, by mid-June Trump had blocked $425 billion in financing approved earlier by Congress.

However, Trump and his supporters have pledged more requests for <x0-based funds”, in an effort to shrink the federal government.

The House of Representatives adopted legislation to annul the funds last month with 214 votes pro and 212 against, without changing Trump's request. The four republics joined the 208 Democrats to vote against.

But after several republican senators expressed concern over cuts in global health programmes, Office for Management and Budget Director Russell Wought said Tuesday that PEPFAR, a global programme for the fight against HIV/ AIDS launched in 2003 by President George W. Bush, would be excluded from the cuts.

This change cut the sum from 9.4 billion to $9 billion, which requires another vote in the House of Representatives before the move is sent to the White House for the signing of Trump.

Fund reductions must be approved by Friday. Otherwise, the demand will expire, and the White House will be forced to pursue the spending plans approved by Congress.

Two of the 53 republican senators -- Lisa Murkowski from Alaska and Susan Collins from Maine -- joined the Democrats in voting against legislation.

You don't have to destroy the entire Public Broadcasting Corporation”, Murkowski said in a speech in the Senate.

She added that the Trump administration had provided no guarantee that the fight against diseases such as malaria and polio worldwide would continue. Above all, Murkowski said Congress should retain its role in establishing the way federal funds are spent. /Periscope/
