Supreme Court may block Trump's citizenship order

The Supreme Court of the United States on Thursday appeared determined to prevent President Donald Trump's restrictions on automatic citizenship for US-born children, and to find a way to limit the orders of the lowest courts of American states. It did not become clear that [...]

It did not become clear how such a decision might seem, but a majority of judges expressed concerns about what could happen if the Trump administration, even temporarily, denied citizenship to children born illegally in the United States, reports the Associated Press.

The judges heard arguments of the administration's urgent appeals to the lower court rulings, which have suspended restrictions on citizenship in American states.

The suspension measures have emerged as a critical halt to Trump's efforts at government reform, and as a source of growing anger for the republican president and his allies.

Judges have issued 40 restrictive measures since Trump launched his second presidential mandate in January, State Attorney John Sauer told the court at the start of arguments that lasted over two hours.

The right of automatic citizenship gained by birth is among several issues, most of them related to migration, which the administration has urged the court to examine urgently.

Judges are also considering the demands of the Trump Administration to end humanitarian permits for more than 500,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, and to remove other provisional legal protections of 350,000 other Venezuelans.

The administration remains involved in legal battles for its efforts to expel people accused of gang involvement towards a prison in El Salvador, under a wartime law from the 18th century.

Trump signed an executive order on the first day of his second term, which would deny automatic citizenship to US-born children from people in the country illegally or temporarily.

The order conflicts with a decision by the Supreme Court of 1898, which estimated that the article for citizenship of the 14th Constitution Amendment made citizens of all children born on American soil, with certain exceptions not coming into the case.

US states, immigrants and human rights groups immediately rejected the order in court, while lower courts quickly prevented its implementation until the case was reviewed.

Liberal judges of the Supreme Court appeared determined to support the decisions of lower courts, which assessed that the citizenship changes Trump wants to make would change the meaning of automatic citizenship rights for more than 125 years.

If the government wins the case, it can implement the order on people who have not rejected it in court, Judge Elena Kagan said.

The “those who cannot afford the trial will lose”, she said.

Judge Kettarji Brown Jackson described the administration's approach as “me if you can x1>, which forces these to file charges to stop “violation of human rights by the government”.
