Germany's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Florian Hahn, stressed that stability in the Western Balkans is unstable, where he even asked questions that “what signal would be if Germany, as the EU's largest country, withdrew from Kosovo,” said Hahn.
He recalled the importance of the European Union-brokered agreement in 2023, with active support from France and Germany. According to him, this agreement on normalising relations contains clear obligations for both sides.
“Citizens on both sides of the border rightly expect these agreements to be implemented,” he said, adding that support for the region's European path depends on the will for reform and commitment of political leaders themselves, reports DW, broadcast Express Journal.
“But the will for change must come from the citizens themselves and political leaders, if this will exists then they can count on our support”, it concludes.
In the same debate, CDU MP Volker Mayer-Ley openly criticised Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq, accusing him of a double approach to the normalisation process.
Vice President Vuciq speaks to the EU for normalisation, but at the same time tolerates nationalist forces in the country, often under Moscow's applause,” stressed Mayer-Lay.
Kosovo was also mentioned in the debate marking Germany's 75th anniversary of membership in the Council of Europe. The Christian Democrat MP, Knut Abraham, used his speech to seek support for Kosovo's membership in this organisation.
The newest European democracy, according to the overwhelming majority in the Parliamentary Assembly, has met all conditions for membership in the Council of Europe. It is now up to governments to make a final decision,” said, urging the German government to act in this regard. /Periscope/
