The public announcement emphasises that the US supports a sustainable solution and not only a temporary halt to fighting.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavet said Trump wants a permanent ceasefire that would finally stop the killings and bloodshed in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“I understand that Vladimir Putin this morning offered a temporary ceasefire,” said Leavitt.
The president has made it clear that he wants to see a permanent ceasefire, such as the first step to stop the killings and end the conflict,” she added.
Her statement comes shortly after the Kremlin announced it would ban military operations from May 8th to May 11th, under celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Leavet added that Trump remains optimistic about reaching a peaceful agreement, but also stressed that he is the most frustrated “and most frustrated” with the leaders of the two countries, who “should sit at the negotiating table to find a way out of this” crisis. /Periscope/
