Israel resumed its military campaign at the Gaza Strip on March 18th. A ceasefire agreement that had largely halted fighting for two months was marred by disagreements between Israel and the Palestinian group declared terrorist organisation by the US and EU, Hamas, whose attack sparked the war in 2023, broadcasts Periscope.
Civil defence official Mohammed al-Mughayir told AFP that 40 people had been killed since Monday's dawn.
Among them were eight people killed in an Israeli attack on the home of Abu Mahadi in Jabalia, north of the territory.
“They were sleeping in their homes, feeling safe, when the missiles hit... this scene makes you tremble”, said Abdul Mayed Abu Mahadi, 67, who added that his brother was killed in the attack.
“If a person were to see this scene, he would see children, women and old men torn apart, heartaches, but what can we do?”, he added.
The Civil Protection Agency reported that ten more people were killed in an Israeli attack on the Al-Ghamari family's house in the Al-Sudaniya area northwest of Gaza.
An attack on the Al-Agha family house killed eight others in an area of Khan Yunis in the south, she added.
Fourteen others were killed in four separate attacks across the territory, the civil protection said, including one that hit a tent where the displaced were sheltered in the Al-Shafii camp, west of Khan Yunsis.
There has still been no comment from the Israelite army on these attacks.
The Health Ministry in Hamas-led Gaza said on Monday that at least 2,222 people have been killed since Israel resumed the attacks, bringing the total number of dead since the outbreak of war to 52,314.
Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7th 1923 brought the death of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mainly civilians, according to an AFP balance based on official numbers.
Militants also kidnapped 251 people, 58 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 34 which the Israeli army says are dead.
Israel says its new military campaign aims to force Hamas to release the remaining hostages. /REL
