Even Trump cannot stop the egg price increase, Americans are suggested to hold chickens in courtyards

The Agriculture Secretary in the Trump Administration, Brooke Rollins, suggested to Americans to keep chickens in their courtyards in response to rising egg prices during an interview at Fox News. Egg prices in the United States have risen significantly from $3.42 for ten eggs on January 10th to $8.03 on February 26th, according to Agricultural Department data.
This has been harmful to US President Donald Trump, who has claimed former President Joe Biden's policies have triggered rising food prices on the eve of 2024 elections.
Rollins spoke of egg prices during a conversation with Fox & Friends Weekend host Rachel Campos-Duffififi, who is married to US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy.
I think the bright spot in all this situation is how we can solve it in our courtyards. We got chickens in the yard, too. People look around and think: Maybe I can have chickens in the yard and that's fantastic”, the secretary said.

Campos-Duffifif agreed, adding that “I think anyone who's not a farmer right now wants to be, so you're in the right department, Brooke”.
According to the Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, the retail egg price rose by 8.4 percent in December 2024 and 13.8 percent in January 2025. The service predicts egg prices will rise by 41.1 percent during 2025.
This increase is attributed to bird flu outbreaks with high pathogeny (HPAI), which, according to USA Today, has forced farmers to slaughter some 166 million birds, including egg chickens.
On February 26th, the Trump administration presented a $1.5 billion plan to fight egg prices increase, including $500 million for biosecurity measures, $400 million for farmers affected by HPAI and $100m for medical research and vaccines against the disease.
Rollins also said the administration is negotiating the importation of 70-100 million eggs from abroad, but warned that prices could increase further ahead of Easter holidays, when demand usually increases.
