Secretary - General NATO, Mark Rutte, has held two phone conversations with President Zelensky after failing to meet Donald Trump, where he has suggested the Ukrainian leader repair relations with the American president as soon as possible.
I think you should find a way to fix your relationship with Donald Trump and the entire American administration” has recommended Rutte-Zelensky.
In an interview for the BBC, the Alliance's chief has said he has conveyed a clear message to Kiev. “We have to stay together, the United States, Ukraine and Europe, to bring the country a long-term peace”, Rutte has said.
He has voiced confidence that President Trump is committed to bringing a lasting peace to Ukraine.
Rutte himself met several times with Donald Trump before taking office. He has stressed that US-EU co-operation is vital in terms of security and has advised NATO member states to increase military spending beyond 2 per cent quota.
Trump's latest demand to Europe has been that expenditures in question reach up to 5 per cent of GDP, which is considered very high by several Union countries, including Germany.
