The riots break out: What's going on in Syria?

Syria has been experiencing the greatest violence since the fall of Bashar al-Assad government in December 2024, the ally of Iran and Russia, whose family ruled Syria for 50 years. Wars between Assad's faithful and Syrian government security forces led by the rebel leader [...]

Wars between Assad's loyal ones and the security forces of the Syrian government, which is led by the rebel leader turned into interim president Ahmed al-Sharara, erupted on March 6th in the coastal province of Latakia.

Analysts say these fighting are highlighting Sharia's difficulties in maintaining order and order in Syria after Assad, which pleases countries like Iran, Israel and even Islamic State extremists (IS).

Colin Clarke, director of policies and research in the consultancy group Sougan Group, based in New York, said what's going on in Latakia is the only inevitable 34x1> consequence in a country out of conflict.

“Syria was plunged into civil war for 13 years. In cases like these, almost always there are murders for revenge and violent sectarianism”, he said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), based in the United Kingdom, said on March 8th that it has identified 745 civilians belonging to the alavite minority killed in combat, including “ekzekum on the ground” from Syria's “security forces and Allied groups”.

The observatory said that more than 1,000 people have been killed over the past two days, including 125 members of security forces and 148 loyal fighters of Assad's collapsed regime.

In Homs, Latakia and Tartus have been set for police hours, due to ongoing fighting, and Latakia's governor has announced that electricity has been completely cut off in this province.

Official SANA news agency, citing a source from the Ministry of Interior, admitted that <x0-second individual violation” took place and promised that the Government would end them.

In his first statements on the violence, Shara said that <x0mbare” of the Assad government “tried to prove Syria new” and vowed to bring them to justice.

He did not speak of charges that his forces have killed civilians, but praised the armed forces for their “dedication to protecting and securing civilians”.

Did Iran start the riots?

Fighting began about a week after Turkey's Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, whose country is a major supporter of Sharia's government, warned Iran against efforts to challenge the new Syrian government by empowering opposing groups.

He warned that this “would not be the proper approach” and said such an action could “spur another country to do the same against you”.

Ankara-backed groups joined the offensive launched by the Sharia Group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), declared a US terrorist organisation, to oust Assad from power.

Sharia has hosted dozens of foreign delegations since taking power in Damascus, but has left out of Iran in favour of its rivals, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, as well as Western countries.

Philip Smyth, expert on issues such as Iranian representatives and Shiite militia, said there are “a lot of evidence” that indicate Tehran's involvement in the outbreak of violence in Syria this week.

Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatolah Ali Khamenei, said after Assad's fall that the Syrians would revolt against Shara's rule.

Smyth said Tehran “is pleased that this happened”, especially since it proves that Iran “could cause massive unrest” despite the loss of a key ally like Assad.

The best thing about Tehran is the fact that HTS militants indicated they would be involved in human rights violations. Iran wanted excessive reaction”, he added.

Some observers have also suggested Tehran could support the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to challenge not only Sharaan but also Turkey's growing influence.

Under Assad's rule, Syria played a key role in Iran's strategic land corridor towards the Levant. This corridor was vital to Iran's regional influence, serving as logistical pillars for its network of state and non-state actors.

Who else benefits from these riots?

The new government has faced numerous security challenges since the rebels took power.

People loyal to Assad, belonging to the alavite minority, have repeatedly attacked the security forces of the new government, while the IS remains active in some areas of the country.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have expanded territorial control in southern Syria. They are said to be located some 20 miles [20 km] from the capital.

Israel has targeted military assets and requires demilitarisation of southern Syria.

“IS is extremely opportunistic and will wait for the moment to hit. Israel will also benefit from the situation by conducting more attacks south of Syria”, Clarke said.

“haraa is facing difficulties to maintain order and order, but almost all of this was expected to happen”, he added. /Radio Europe Free
