The Syrian human rights observatory in London said 745 civilians were killed in about 30 massacres targeting the Alavits on Friday and Saturday, however, international media have not independently confirmed the figures.
Hundreds of people have reportedly fled their residences in the region known as the centre of President Bashar Al Assad, who belongs to the Alavi sect, reports the BBC.
A total of 1,000 people have been killed over the past two days, according to the Syrian human rights observatory, in the worst outbreak of violence since the rebel forces overthrew Bashar Al Assad's regime.
Bilanci includes around 148 pro Assad fighters and at least 128 members of the Islamic-led government's security forces, who are fighting in Latakia of Tartus. The Alavits, a submarine of Shii Islam, make up about 10 per cent of the Syrian population, mostly Sunit.
