American President Donald Trump gave a speech in Congress. He spoke for two full hours. The speech is Trump's first speech since his return to the White House.
Trump sent a message to the people of Greenland during his speech in Congress. “Tonight I have a message for the extraordinary people of Greenland: we strongly support your right to determine your future”, Trump said. “If you decide, you are welcome in the United States of America”, he added.
He said the US needs Greenland for “national and international security. I think we'll get it. In one way or another, we will reach it”, Trump said.
Greenland at the heart of global interests
Trump is ever more vocal in the fact that Greenland, an autonomous territory within Denmark, will be American. It all started after he won the November 2024 elections. Trump then expressed his desire to buy Greenland. He first spoke of it in 2019.
Greenland has long been in the spotlight of great powers because of its strategic location in the Arctic and its wealth of natural resources. Melting ice in the region has further increased its importance, paving new transportation routes and access to rich mineral resources, including rare lands that are essential to modern technologies such as batteries and renewable energy sources.
According to the Arctic Council, shipping through Arctic roads increased by 37% between 2013 and 2023, making the region attractive for trade and investment. China already announced its plan to create a “Polary Road of Silk” in 2018, connecting Europe and Asia across the Arctic Ocean as Russia continued to modernise its military bases in the region.
