EU countries granted citizenship to more than one million residents in 12 months, so which countries are naturalising more foreigners?
EU countries have granted citizenship to 1,050,100 foreign residents in 2023, the latest data from Eurostat, the EU statistical office.
This is an increase of over 6 percent compared with 2022 and does not take into account the naturalization of those living abroad, such as those who have obtained marital citizenship or background.
Spain was the country that granted the largest number of citizenships (240,200), followed by Italy (213,600), Germany (199800), and France (97,300). While some of the larger countries are expected to register the largest number of new citizens, Sweden's tenth EU member state of the population was fifth (67800) in the naturalisation rankings, the albinfo.ch broadcasts.
In general, these five countries made up 78 percent of new EU citizenships in 2023.
Sweden was also the second of the countries with the highest number of citizenships in proportion to the total population (6.4 per thousand), preceded by Luxembourg (8.8), and followed by Spain (5), Belgium (4.7) and Italy (3.6), theocal writes.
However, Sweden also recorded the largest decline in the number of naturalizations compared to 2022, followed by France (minutes 17,,200) and Portugal (minutes 3,800).
