He has made these comments hours after claims by US officials that the European Union may not be consulted for launching peace talks with Russia in order to end the war in Ukraine.
“There should be no sharing of security and responsibility between Europe and the US”, Scholz told reporters after holding an emergency European summit in Paris, Radio Free Europe reported.
In other words, NATO works on the fact that we always act together and share the risk, and thus ensure security. This should not be questioned”, Scholz said among others.
Besides Scholz, part of the meeting has been British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyeen, chief of the country. NATO, Mark Rutte, and French President Emmanuel Macron as the host of the meeting.
The German Chancellor has long called the discussion about sending European peacekeeping forces to Ukraine.
“I'm a little irritated by these debates”, Scholz said after meeting with European leaders.
According to him, this discussion is not taking place at the right time because peace has not yet been achieved, but Ukraine is in the midst of a brutal war launched by Russia.
At the start of the summit, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he is willing to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine if necessary.
Even Macron has long called for the formation of a European peacekeeping force.
Scholz has said he is completely against sending soldiers to Ukraine without American involvement.
