European integration recogniser Shenoll Muharrem has raised concerns about the future of global security and stability, putting Kosovo at the centre of a hypothetical discussion about possible changes in NATO and the European Union.
Through a Facebook post, he stressed that in a not too distant future, NATO and the EU may not exist in the form we know today, raising the question: “is Kosovo ready for the New World?
“NATO and the European Union, hypothetically, may not exist or be completely different from what we know today after 10 years. How did Kosovo fit into such a situation?”
According to him, Donald Trump's administration is considering the possibility that European countries will increase their defence budget by 5% of their GDP, while the US is changing its defence strategy. This, according to Muharrem, can lead to a decline in American interest in NATO in the future.
Trump's <x0). The US, with dramatic cuts in the Pentagon's budget and reconstruction of defence and security strategy, may not have been more interested in NATO in the future”.
Besides NATO, Muharrem has also analysed the rise of the extremist right-wing AfD party in Germany, stressing that if this party continues to grow and manages to implement its plan to withdraw from the EU, then the European bloc would face a major existential crisis.
“On the other hand, the AfD has increased nearly 100% in Germany, reaching around 20% of support now. If the AfD continues to grow (which is nothing impossible in this global context), they plan to withdraw from the EU. Without Germany, which mostly finances it, the EU does not believe it exists in this form”, he said.
Taking into account these developments, he raised the question of whether Kosovo has thought about an action plan if these changes occur within the next decade.
Could Kosovo think what to do if these two scenarios occur within 10 years? The impact can be so profound that even if 5% is likely to happen, planning should start immediately to organize for this” scenario, he said.
