The decision to appoint him has angered protesters who gathered outside parliament last month, demanding justice for a deadly train crash in 2023.
They say that in the time of Tassulas as parliament speaker, lawmakers failed to investigate any political responsibility for Greece's worst railway disaster.
Two years later, a judicial investigation is still under way. Parliament is the only organ that can investigate politicians under Greek law.
Tassulas, 66, a lawyer and father of two who has been an MP since 2000 and has previously served as culture minister and Greece's deputy defence minister, won the support of 160 deputies in Wednesday's vote in the 300-seat parliament.
He will succeed Katerina Sakellaropoulos, Greece's first female president, whose five-year term expires in March, Reuters writes,
