The chairman of the so-called Mitrovica Citizens' Association, Rasa Rojevic, has warned a few days ago that from tomorrow, Serbs will organise blockades at all border points with Kosovo. According to him, the blockade will last until Kosovo police withdraw from the country's north.
KFOR has reacted to this warning.
According to them, it is important to avoid actions that can cause unnecessary tension.
“This is the key to sustainable security in Kosovo and regional stability”, KFOR's response said.
Peacekeeping Mission NATO in Kosovo says it is closely following current developments and continues to implement its UN mandate to contribute to a safe environment for all people in Kosovo and freedom of movement at any time and impartially.
Meanwhile, in response KFOR has said that other comments concerning the issue of warning of borderlocks, the media address Serbia's authorities.
Kosovo's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspore (MPJD) has called on Kosovo citizens late Wednesday and Kosovo exiles to avoid border crossings between Kosovo and Serbia during their transit journey, due to warnings of blocking roads in Serbia leading to border crossings this week.
In a Facebook notice, The MPJD said that a “also called the Organisation Council for Blockadie in Serbia” has indicated that September 6th it intends to block roads leading to border crossings with Kosovo.
It urged all citizens and members of the exile to carefully follow new developments and warnings regarding the situation and to be informed only of the official sources of Kosovo institutions, to avoid dezinformations and false news”.
This announcement comes at a time when Kosovo authorities have angered Serbia with a series of actions that they have taken in the country's north-of-the-country residential Serb-run part, prompting criticism from the international community.
Last week, Prime Minister Albin Kurti's government shut down five Serb parallel institutions in the four Serb majority municipalities, which it said acted in opposition to the country's laws and constitution.
In some of the artifacts formerly used by parallel institutions, plaques have been placed recently showing that they will now be used as offices for some of the Kosovo ministries and their departments.
Workers of those parallel institutions have protested two days against their closure.
Kosovo police confirmed to Radio Free Europe that on Wednesday they interviewed five people linked to these parallel institutions.
The closure of these parallel institutions preceded the Serbian dinar ban and the closure of several branches of Serbia's Post in the north earlier this year.
The Kosovo government has repeatedly said it is trying to establish order and law, especially in Serb-run northern Kosovo, eliminating Serb parallel institutions.
Kurti Government decisions have been sharply criticised as mutual and uncoordinated “by the international community, which has said they risk increasing tensions.
In 2022, Serbs in the north blocked roads towards border points between Kosovo and Serbia following the arrest of a former Kosovo Serb police officer. They were removed after a few weeks.
A few days ago, the so-called chairman of the Association of Citizens of the Mitrovica District, Rasa Guardwiq, has announced that on Friday, September 6th, the blockade of all border crossings in Kosovo will begin.
Security warned that the blockade would continue until Kosovo police forces withdraw from Kosovo's north and institutions return to Serbs.
“Blokada will begin Friday and last until Kosovo police forces withdraw from northern Kosovo and the usurped institutions return to Serbs. We also demand that KFOR, in line with the mandate of Resolution 1244, take over northern Kosovo”, said KoSSev.
He said the blockade would be carried out by citizens from central Serbia, Montenegro and Republika Srpska, deliberately excluding Serbs living in Kosovo for what he claims to be protected from possible revenge by Kosovo police.
He claimed that no “assistance from the state will be expected for this plan and that they do not need their help.
We do not expect help from the state, nor do we need it. The “Serbs living in Kosovo will not participate in blockades not to be harassed by Kosovo police, but only citizens from the territory of central Serbia, Montenegro and Republika Srpska”, said Gutervic.
He even added that transport will be provided for all participants interested in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Smedereva, Kragujevac, Nis, Krushevci, Vranja, Raska and that hospital vehicles will be allowed to pass through the crossing blockade.
In light of the closure of five Serb parallel institutions in the north by Kosovo authorities, about 300 Serb citizens gathered before an object that was previously used by Serb parallel municipalities in northern Mitrovica.
The Government's move was strongly condemned by the United States and the European Union, describing the decision as uncoordinated and unilateral.
The August 30th event, carried out by Kosovo institutions, was described as unilateral and co-ordinated by the international community, and was also rejected by the Serb List, the main party of local Serbs in Kosovo that has Belgrade's support, and by officials in Serbia.
The US clearly stressed that the actions, although proud that it has supported the establishment and professionalism of the Kosovo Police, its continued instrumentisation by the Kosovo Government uncoordinated is not in line with promises that it will continue consultation and co-ordination with the international community”.
