According to the chairman of the “Life Line”, Bind Skeja marks an extraordinary achievement in dealing with suicide in Kosovo, starting for the first time the process of drafting policies, which according to him, have a major concern of reducing suicides through the treatment of citizens' dignity.
Although not hosted by Parliament Speaker Glauk Konjufca, this is a serious approach to the organization.
We have concluded the petition for the draft law on preventing suicide by 13 thousand and 361 signatures by citizens of the Republic of Kosovo. This marks an extraordinary achievement in dealing with suicide in Kosovo, starting for the first time in the policy-making process, which the main threat has reduced suicides through the dignified treatment of our fellow citizens... Unfortunately, we're not hosted by the Speaker of the Assembly, Conjufca, or by someone in his cabinet as envisioned by regulations. This for us first shows us a serious approach, but we hope it's not representative for the full process”, Skeya said.
Asked about suicide statistics in Kosovo taken by Kosovo Police, Skeja has added that he does not consider KP statistics credible because there are no mechanisms to monitor.
Skeya, stressed that there were times when people who died of overdose were not treated as suicide, even though the purpose was.
The “is not that we consider police statistics very reliable, because it's not that there are mechanisms for monitoring, they're all registered by hand. There were even cases of people who died of overdoses, they weren't recorded as suicide, even though the purpose was”, he stressed.
Through this petition, the “Life Line” requires a law regulating clinical suicide prevention services, the integration of suicide prevention into institutional objectives, non-clinic services and social support, mechanisms for reducing access to self-inflicted means and other regulations.
