The suspect's name for the assassination attempting Republican candidate for President Donald Trump has been published.
New York Times and Fox News Channel reported that it was 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh from Hawaii.
The attacker was arrested, as announced The FBI on Sunday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is safe after an assassination near his golf course at West Palm Beach, Florida, reports Express newspaper.
The Washington Post reported that Trump was playing golf in the field when the incident occurred.
County Sheriff Palm Beach said at a press conference that the armed man was in the bush near the golf course when Secret Service agents, who were controlling the ground before Trump, saw the gun barrel. The agents shot at him and he threw the AK-47-type rifle, two backpacks and other stuff and left with a black Nissan.
A witness saw the assailant and managed to take a picture of his car and license plates, which led the deputy sheriffs to recognize and stop him in a neighboring district.
“He is currently in custody,” said County Sheriff Palm Beach, Rich Bradshaw.
Trump was taken to security as soon as the assailant was spotted. He's later made it known on social networks himself that he's fine.
An unnamed police official said Trump was 300-400m away from the assailant, that is, one or two holes in the golf course.
Speaking to American media, Routh's son, Oran, described it as a careful and loving “father. I don't know what happened in Florida and I hope it's all exaggerated. He is not a man who would do such a thing,” said Oran in a statement for CNN.
BBC Verifu found social media profiles that match that name. They show that Routh invited foreign fighters to go to Ukraine to fight Russian forces. His profile also includes pro-Palestinian, pro-Tajvani and anti-kinese messages, including charges of <x0) Chinese biowar” and reference to Covid-19 as a “attack”.
Routh, who had no military experience, told the New York Times in 2023 that he traveled to Ukraine shortly after the start of the Russian invasion in 2022 to find military recruits among Afghan soldiers who had fled the Taliban. “We may be able to buy some passports through Pakistan because it is such a corrupt place,” he said.
Routh also told the Times that he had a meeting in Washington with the US Commission for Security and Co-operation in Europe to help secure more support for Ukraine.
He seems to have been involved in the recruiting since the beginning of this summer, writing on Facebook in July: “Wishers, please don't call me. We're still trying Ukraine to accept Afghan soldiers and hopefully get some answers in the vicinity. The future.. I ask your patience. ”
In June 2022, Routh also spoke with the Romanian branch of Newsweek, also about efforts to recruit volunteers for the Ukraine International Defence Legion, a Ukrainian Land Forces unit. For me, many world conflicts are grey, but this is obviously white and black,” said Routh at the time. “This is a story of good against evil. ”
Early reports suggested that Routh had a criminal record. According to CBS sources, Routh was charged and convicted of multiple crimes at Guilford County, North Carolina between 2002 and 2010.
Criminal acts include carrying a hidden weapon, resisting arrest, running a suspended license vehicle, stealing and causing an accident, and leaving the scene of an accident.
