British and American spy chiefs have said that, together, “are working over and over again” for a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza, in a rare public statement.
MI6 chief Sir Richard Moore and CIA Director Bill Burns said that both agencies have “used our intelligence channels to push hard for content and de-progress” in the Middle East.
In a joint article written for the Financial Times, spying leaders wrote: “Our services are working over and over again to reach a ceasefire and hostage deals in Gaza, which could end the suffering and terrible loss of the lives of Palestinian civilians and bring hostages home after 11 months of insulation from Hamas”.
The duo said Burns in particular had played a practical “in the negotiations in Egypt, uniting the opposing parties to mediate a hostage agreement and ceasefire in August.
The United Kingdom and the US have largely acted on their approach to the Gaza conflict, but this week the government of Keir Starmer deviated from this approach, announcing it would suspend several arms export licenses in Israel.
Soon reports were followed by American officials, who privately warned the British government against this movement, although the United Kingdom ministers have publicly insisted that this has not affected relations. /Express
