Biserko seeks verification of information that houses for Serbs from Kosovo are being built in Serbia

Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia head Sonja Biserko said she has forwarded it to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, concerns about some information from Serbia, that in the Sandzak region in this country, “are building homes and dwellings for Kosovo Serbs, especially those from north”, but [...]

A day earlier, the Government of Kosovo announced that Kurti has hosted the Biserko meeting, along with Nenad Cananku, former leader of the centre-left party, the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, and Mark Baskin, senior adviser to the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue.

In the published communiqué, Kurti's guests announced that such an opportunity is being discussed in Serbia.

“As someone who has been dealing with the refugee issue since the 1990s here, I remind you that there have always been rumors, which later resulted in ecstasy or displacement of the population”, Biserko said in a statement to Radio Free Europe.

“We have told the Government of Kosovo that it should pay attention to these information and do everything possible for the Serb population to be held north of Kosovo”, Biserko said.

According to her, it is up to society and the Government of Kosovo, as well as civil and international organisations, to verify how accurate this information is.

Free Radio Europe asked Kosovo Government spokesman Progress Kryeziu how this institution aims to proceed with this information, but received no answers.

Of the institutions in Serbia, there was no reaction after publishing information about Kurti's meeting with Biserko, Canak and Baskin.

REL contacted the cabinet of the president of Serbia, the Government of Serbia and the Office for Kosovo in Belgrade, but no institution responded.

In Kosovo there are ten Serb-run municipalities scattered north and south of the Iber River.

The exact number of the population is not known, since Serbs from four municipalities in the north ão Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq have largely boycotted the population census, which was made in the spring of this year.

According to preliminary data from the Kosovo Statistics Agency, published on July 12th, only about 6,500 people in this area have responded to the census, while tens of thousands are believed to live there.

This part, developed by Serbia and its parallel structures there, does not easily comply with the decisions of the Government of Kosovo since the post-war, in 1999.

As a result, protests and tensions have often become a hotbed. / REL/
