New EU Agency for Asylum (EUAA) data shows 513,000 new applications from January to the end of June, meaning 6,000 less compared to the first half of 1923.
Statistics include figures from all EU countries, as well as Norway and Switzerland, which are not part of the bloc.
Most applications were registered in Germany, 124,000 respectively, which is about a quarter of the total.
By the end of this year, The EUAA said it expects more than a million applications across the region.
According to its data, some 71,000 asylum seekers were registered from Syria, while about 45,000 from Afghanistan and 37,000 from Venezuela.
The figures do not include around 4.5 million people from Ukraine, who have sought refuge in the EU and have received temporary protection since Russia has launched its country's invasion in February 2022. /rel/
