German police reported that a 26-year-old Syrian has surrendered, saying he was the author of the knife attack on Solingen, which caused the deaths of three people while eight others were injured at a festival marking the city's 650th anniversary.
Dusseldorf police said in a joint statement with the prosecutor's office that the 26-year-old had accepted authorship.
The inclusion of this person in the attack is being investigated intensively”, the statement said.
Federal prosecutors said they burden several charges against him: murder, attempted murder and membership in a foreign terrorist organisation. At the time of his surrender, his clothes were blood, German media reported.
The suspect, Syrian citizen, had applied for asylum in Germany, police confirmed the Associated Press news agency. He lived in a home for refugees in Solingen, who was searched. Police also arrested a 15-year-old boy who allegedly knew in advance of the attack.
Meanwhile, German federal prosecutors are investigating whether the suspect was a member of the militant Islamic State group, a spokesman said.
The group named the attacker a “Islamic State envoy” in a statement in its Telegram account on Saturday. “He carried out the attack in retaliation for Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere”, said the group's statement, but without any evidence of his claims.
Friday's attack triggered fears and shocks in the town of Solingen, a town of about 160 thousand people near the largest cities of Klin and Dusseldorf.
The fact that it's delivered will calm us down. It's so good that the person has surrendered and now the police are investigating. But what happened is incomprehensible”, says Cord Boettcher, resident of Solingen.
What will happen in the coming weeks? I can't even go anywhere. Of course it's reassuring that he has surrendered, but I'm speechless and completely shocked. This can happen again and again”, says another resident.
The attack occurred amid the debate on immigration before next Sunday's elections in two regions, where anti-imigration parties like the Alternative for Germany are expected to achieve good results. / VOA
