No official cause of death has been given at the moment, but her son Nick Cassavetes said in June that his mother had been struggling with Alzheimer's disease for the last five years.
Rowlands played in ten films of her first husband John Cassavetes and was married to her for 35 years, until his death in 1989.
Its performance in the 1974 film “A woman under the influence” (A woman under influence) in which she played for a house whose mental health is in crisis gave her a Golden Globe and the first of two nominations for Oscar for best actress.
