Kosovo-Serbia dialogue: Hopes in New Mediator Urged to Increase Pressure

Recognisors of this process do not expect results towards implementing them until next year. According to them, only after selecting the new mediator of this process could there be results in dialogue.

The table of discussions in Brussels, which pitted Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq, this year did not produce results.

Arrangements occurred, but not even actions that lead to normalisation, nor implementation of previously reached agreements.

Recognition of this process does not expect results in dialogue before February of next year.

Light up Arifi, professor of International Relations, told RTK that seeing the situation in the EU and the US does not expect there will be something before February 2025. He said the Serb side is hesitant.

According to politician Fidan Ukaj, implementation of agreements between the two states can only be achieved when the dialogue mediator is resolved.

According to him, the European Union should also be harsher with Serbia.

According to Dusan Ynjiqi, director of the Forum for Ethnic Relations in Serbia, the continuation of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia is fraught with challenges and inefficients in implementing what has been agreed on.

According to him, the current situation requires a redefinition of EU and US access.

The European envoy's “Mandati was extended by the end of January, due to disagreements over the new name and the need for Brussels to redefine policy on many issues, including Kosovo. For the United States, the case is different. The US administration can come up with a new policy only in February, provided there is a change. Otherwise, politics remains the same”, Janjic has said of RTK.

Janzic expects the United States to continue to focus on regional security issues, where the priority is the issue of Banjska's attack, but also problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

And it's going to be seriously working until January, because there are obligations that have been taken, and that are very important for America, and it could be the topic of elections there, if the issues on the ground like Banjska are not adequately addressed. Likewise, Dodik and Republika Srpska, which are becoming a threat and direct challenge to US credibility as the guarantor of peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Therefore, I expect methodology to be serious, and objectively America should and wait for the EU”, Janjiq added.

Janzic expects a package of new methodology for dialogue should be prepared since January, after elections in the US and with the new European envoy. The point of which will be efficiency.

Since 2011, Kosovo and Serbia had reached a series of agreements, including the one for freedom of movement, energy, civil registry, justice and revitalisation of the Ibri Bridge, which was ratified in the Assembly in 2013.

In 2023 the agreement on normalizing relations was reached, but it is still not being implemented.
