Israel has pledged to eliminate Yahya Sinwar, the new leader of Hamas, the Palestinian group declared terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.
Sinwar is believed to be the architect of the October 7th Israeli attack that sparked the war in Gaza.
Sinwar's appointment at the helm of Hamas came after last week, the group's political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehera.
Iran has blamed Israel for the murder and has vowed to retaliate. Israel is not responsible for the murder of Haneyeh.
Speaking during a visit to a military base, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netayah said Israel is “set up” to defend itself.
“We are prepared in terms of both defence and attacking”, he told new recruits.
Army chief General Herzepi Halev pledged that “we will find him [Sinwarin] and attack”. He added that Israel would force Hamas to find a replacement for Yahoa Sinwar.
The Hamas' Sinwar Glider in Gaza since 2017 has not been seen since the October 7th attack, the most deadly attack on Israel's history.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has declared that it is up to Sinwar to help achieve the ceasefire, stressing that he has been and continues to be the main person to make decisions in the radical group.
Meanwhile, analysts have said Sinwar may be more reluctant to reconcile for a Gaza truce and is closer to Tehran than Haneyeh.
The war in Gaza began after Hamas killed some 1,200 people in northern Israel and kidnapped another 250. Israel retaliated with an air, land and sea offensive that has so far left nearly 40,000 dead, while Palestinians in Gaza face a deep humanitarian crisis. /rel
