The European Union has added on Monday 28 officials and <x0...propagandistes” to the blacklist, linked to the crackdown on opponents, authoritarian leader Alexander Lucashenka.
The 27-member bloc has sometimes sanctioned the Belarusn government, since authorities have begun to press protests against the Lucas regime in 2020.
The EU has added sanctions on Belarus to its role in the launch of Russia's war in Ukraine.
With the last decision, the number of Belarusic individuals on the EU blacklist has gone to 261.
On that list are Lucas and his family.
Among the individuals sanctioned Thursday are Irina Aculovich, head of the national news agency BelTA, and television host Nikita Rachilovsky.
These regime propagandists have deliberately spread false information about the printing carried out by state authorities”, the EU said through a statement.
Lukashenka, Russia's closest ally, had started printing protests in August 2020, as his claim to victory in the election had sparked massive protests.
The Viasna Human Rights Group estimates that Belarus has over 1,400 political prisoners and that thousands of others have fled the country.
