During this week, the meeting between the country's president, Vjosa Osmani, and political party leaders, is expected to be discussed on the appointment of the parliamentary election date.
The meeting is expected to be held on July 31st, at 2: 00 p.m., in the Republic of Kosovo's Parliament building, while political subjects have already confirmed participation.
Political parties have confirmed participation in the meeting called by the president to consult on the appointment of the election date.
From the Vetevendosje Movement said they are ready for elections whenever they are announced, while in terms of the possible date, they will give the proposal at the meeting with the president, following the assessment of all circumstances.
It is important that for the first time in Kosovo since the Declaration of Independence a government and legislature are closing a full mandate. This thanks to citizens' plebiscious support in past elections, as well as good governance and successful legislature. As for the election date, the Constitution and the Election Law do not leave many options and the legal options that exist and that are four dates are not far from each other”, said Alim Rama, organising secretary of the Vetevendosje Movement.
And PDK Secretary General Vlora Citaku said they will attend the meeting, but according to her, this invitation is not linked to early elections, as such a thing has long been demanding by the PDK.
“The PDK has accepted the invitation of President Osmani to a meeting about the election date set. Of course, we will respond to the invitation, we have a constitutional and legal obligation to receive such a meeting. You know that the PDK has been asking for early elections since July last year, but President Osmani's invitation does not concern early elections with setting the date for fair elections, and we will participate in the position on this issue and the preferred date we will say there”, Citaku said.
Even the Democratic League of Kosovo has already confirmed its participation in this meeting.
Meanwhile, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo has hinted it will take part in the meeting, but the party spokesman has stressed that the decision will be made Monday by party structures.
We have received a letter from the President. Based on this letter, the president of consultations would be holding for the appointment of the general election date within the regular deadline. I don't see any reason for the Alliance not to be part of the consultations, but the decisions on this issue will take up party structures, I believe on Monday, said the Cemajli Conservation, the AAK spokesperson.
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has officially invited political party leaders to meet on July 31st for consultations on the appointment of the election date.
The president has sent a letter to party leaders, in which she has written that based on the Constitution and the Law for General Elections, elections should be held during January 26th- February 16th 2025.
“in this direction, based on my constitutional competencies for declaring elections for the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo, was invited to the consultative meeting on July 31st 2024, at 2: 00 p.m. at the S301 Hall, at the Assembly Building of the Republic of Kosovo”, the president's letter to political parties says.
The last national elections were held on February 14, 2021, when the Vetevendosje Movement came first with more than 50 per cent of the vote. The second party was PDK, the third to LDK, and the fourth to the AAK. Fatmir Limaj's party had failed to pass the election threshold.
Vetevendosje had won the coalition elections with the “Gux” established by Vjosa Osmani, now president of the Republic.
Three months ago, Prime Minister Albin Kurti had invited political parties for a meeting, where the election theme was opened. Only the leader had gone there PDK, Memli Krasniqi, who had called for holding elections during June. The LDK and AAK had not agreed to go to the polls, disseminating the Parliament, but demanded the government's resignation.
