Former US President Barack Obama expressed his support for President Joe Biden tonight after the latter decided to leave the presidential race, describing him as “a top-ranking patriot”.
I know Joe's never retired from a war. For him to look at the political landscape and decide that he must pass the torch to a new candidate is certainly one of the most difficult in his life. But I know he wouldn't make that decision if he didn't believe he was the one for America. It is a testament to Joe Biden's love for the country and a historical example of a real public officer who once again puts the interests of the American people ahead of his own interests, that future generations of leaders would do well to follow,” said in a statement by the Barack Office and Michele Obama. “We will sail to unexplored waters in the days ahead. But I am outstandingly confident that our party leaders will be able to create a process from which a prominent candidate will emerge. I believe that Joe Biden's vision of a generous, prosperous and united America that offers opportunities for all will be fully displayed at the Democratic Convention in August. And I expect each of us to be prepared to convey that message of hope and progress ahead in November and beyond,” concludes the statement.
The declaration does not include an approval of Vice President Kamala Harris as a new democratic candidate. / CNN
