A very serious blow has been inflicted on Hamas: Palestinian terrorist movement leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed at dawn by an attack on Tehran, where he was after attending the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president. The confirmation came from the organisation that carried out the massacre against Jews on October 7th: responsibilities were attributed to a Tel Aviv attack, defined as “a cowardly syonic attack”. According to one Iranian source reportedly, the missile was launched by another country, not within Iran.
“We are in an ongoing fight against the occupant enemy and resistance does not end with the killing of his leaders,” said Abdul Salam Hanyeh, one of Ismaili's sons. Who underlined that “Hamas will continue to resist until the liberation of Palestine”. The murder is destined to cause another serious escalation in the Middle East: Musa Abu Marzook, a member of Hamas' political bureau, stated that what happened “would not remain unpunished”. And meanwhile, Turkey, Iran and Russia have condemned Israel.
Who was Hanyeh?
Hanyeh was Hamas ' leader - general. In 1980 he became a leading member of the movement and took office as political leader in 2017 by Khaled Meshaal. Born in Al-Shati on 29 January 1962, he graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza for Arabic language and literature. For a very short period, from 2006 to 2007, he was prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority.
Moreover, from 2014 to 2017, he has acted as head of the Gaza Belt Administration. From 2017 to 2024, he became head of Hamas' political bureau. In 2019 he left the Gaza Strip to live and work in Doha, Qatar. The task carried out by Haniyeh should not be confused with that of Yehya Sinwar, who is the leader of Hamas in Gaza and considered organiser of the October 7th attack.
Israel: “Now a slightly better world”
The first member of the Israeli government to speak after the death of Haniyeh was Amichay Eliyaah, the minister of his heritage: his death makes the world a little better.” For Eliyah, the time of imaginary peace/handling agreements and mercy to those who caused bloodshed in Israel has ended. It's the right way to clear the world of this mess. The iron fist that will strike is the one that will bring peace and comfort and strengthen our ability to live peaceably with those who want peace,” he added.
Abu Mazen: “Basko and resist”
Mahmud Abbas, known as Abu Mazen, did not delay the reaction of Mahmud Abbas, naming the attack on Haniyeh as the coward “”. The Palestinian president urged his people to join Israel, urging them to “unite, remain patient and stand firm against the Israeli invasion”. Meanwhile, reports LaFresse, political factions of occupied territory have called a series of protests against the assassination.
Turkey attacks Israel
In a statement, Turkey's Foreign Ministry pointed the finger at Benjamin Netanyah's government: “It does not intend to achieve peace”. Ankara's diplomacy states that the killing of Haniyeh is aimed at spreading the war to Gaza on a regional scale. “If the international community does not intervene to stop Israel, the region will face much more serious conflicts”, it says. So the world has been asked to stop the Jewish state before the conflict spreads further.
Russian sentence: “unacceptable”
Soon after, Russia's stance, speaking in Mikhail Bogdanov's words, reached an absolutely unacceptable “political suicide”, which risks having the effect of a new escalation of tensions. “All this is very bad”, the Russian deputy foreign minister added. Moscow's fear is that the episode may have implications for the Doha negotiations.
Emergency Meetings in Iran
For Nasser Canaan, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the killing of Haneyeh will have the effect of strengthening the deep and incompatible <x) connection between the Islamic Republic of Iran, loving Palestine and resistance forces”. Iran's Supreme National Security Council immediately called an emergency meeting, which is being held at the residence of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The commander of the Kurdish Forces, who oversees the militant network linked to Iran, is believed to be also participating. Possible risks are a months-long delay for a Gaza ceasefire and a revenge by militant groups backed by Iran in the region. / world.al
