France's President Emmanuel Macron said he would not appoint the new Government until after the end of the Paris Olympics.
Comments come after the New People's Front (NFP) a left-wing coalition representing the largest group in the French Parliament after the last elections proposed a little-known official, Lucia Castles, as a candidate for prime minister.
Responding to this, Macron said the appointment of the new government before mid-August, “would create irregularities”.
Left-wing politicians said Makron is trying to “to cancel the outcome of legislative elections”, whose second round was held on 7 July.
The Olympics will begin Friday and end on 11 August.
Macron has accepted Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's resignation, following the major losses of their centre-in-election party.
However, Attal and his ministers have agreed to remain in office, in the form of a temporary government, until their replacements are appointed.
Under the French system, the prime minister is traditionally appointed by the president. /rel
