The ruling party, the Vetevendosje Movement, expects that during the leadership of the European Union presidency from Hungary, there will be positive moves in terms of gaining EU membership candidate status, which is more than a year and a half standing in EU drawers. Yet, skeptical of such a thing are from the opposition and connoisseurs of European integrations.
Vetevendosje Movement MP Driton Hyseni tells Kosovo that he expects Hungary to have a pro-active and positive role in reviewing the application for obtaining candidate country status for Kosovo. He is optimistic that, during the Hungarian presidency, punitive measures against Kosovo will also be largely withdrawn.
Yet, skeptical of such a thing is MP PDK, Ferat Shala.
According to him, the obstacle to EU membership is the five non-recognising countries of Kosovo, as well as the failure to implement dialogue agreements. It requires that punitive measures against Kosovo be removed in the second part of this year.
On the other hand, former Kosovo diplomat Blerim Canay, claims that considering the Kosovo membership application in the Hungarian presidentate will be difficult even because of the prime minister's pro approach, Viktor Orban.
Hungary has assumed the presidency of the EU Council on 1 July 2024, and will hold until 31 December. On 1 January, the next presidency will chair Poland.
Kosovo applied for EU membership in December 2022.
