At a press conference, police chief Merseyside Serena Kennedy confirmed the deaths of two children, saying nine other children were injured and six are in critical condition. Kennedy added that two adults are also in critical condition.
Hart Street in Southport, England, a coastal town located about 20 miles north of Liverpool.
Police confirmed that a 17-year-old native of Cardiff was arrested in connection with the stab. Kennedy said at the press conference that he was sent to custody with suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
The investigation is still in early stages and the motive is still unclear, but police have not considered it terrorist.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the event a truly horrible “ ” and “the whole country is deeply shocked”.
The attacker, described as wearing a mask on his face, arrived at Hart Street in a taxi and refused to pay the fee, a witness said.
Many people reported seeing a few children bleeding on the street after being stabbed. Some witnesses also say they heard a woman running in the street screaming “my daughter was stabbed by”.
