NATO Watch Group co-chairmen in the Senate, Democrat Jean Shaheen and Republican Thom Tillis voiced bipartisan devotion to peace and stability in the Western Balkans on Tuesday and discussed ways in which the United States can support the region's aspirations for membership in the European Union.
The two senators expressed their positions in a press release following a two-party meeting in the Capitol with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Northern Macedonia Prime Minister Hristian Mickoski and Montenegrin Foreign Minister Filip Ivanovic, who are in Washington for the NATO summit.

Senators praised the contributions of these countries to NATO, continued support for Ukraine and their role in regional stability.
“We have the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the Western Balkans by supporting each of these countries' progress towards EU membership, which would help our transatlantic alliance achieve regional and global stability”, said Senator Shaheen.
Our steadfast “Unity is a clear expression of the United States' determination to curb efforts to undermine peace and stability in the region”, she said.
The region of the Western Balkans is critical of Europe's security, and as co-chairmen of NATO's Watch Group in the Senate, we made it clear that the United States is committed to opposing totalitarian regimes, particularly in conditions when Russia continues its illegal fight against Ukraine and threatens our NATO allies”, Senator Tillis said.
Republican senators Mike Rounds, Jerry Moran and Pete Rickyts also attended the meeting.
As co-chairmen of NATO's Watch Group, Senators Shaheen and Tillis have led two-party efforts in the Senate in support of the transatlantic Alliance.
They have called for a reconfirmation of US commitment to NATO.
This week in Washington, the alliance's summit is being held, marking the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty for its establishment -- an anniversary coming amid vital challenges for the alliance. / VOA
