After winning the conservatives in European elections, “everything speaks” that “may have a second term in office for Ursula von der Leenen”, Scholz said in an interview for the Welt television channel on Saturday. He expects the issue to be resolved quickly at the EU level.
However, the Chancellor reiterated that the support of von der Leyen from him and the Social Democrats in the European Parliament depends on the CSU policy that does not link alliances with ultra-right parties like Italian Fratelli dãolalia led by Prime Minister Giorgia Mellon. Von der Leyen must rely on “on traditional parties and not on ultra right-wing parties”, Scholz told ARD on Saturday after the G7 summit in Italy.
EU heads of state and government will discuss meeting several important EU jobs at a special summit tomorrow. In addition to the Commission's top position, the position of EU Council President and European Representative for Foreign Affairs is included. The strongest force in the EU in the European Parliament elections a week ago was conservative PEPs, including German CSU and CSU parties.
Scholz and von der Leyeen both attended the G7 summit in Italy on Thursday and Friday. They also had room to have confidential discussions in meeting margins.
Scholz is convinced there will soon be decisions on EU personnel issues. “I have the feeling that it doesn't make sense to have a long game here, but that things can be put up quickly” he told the ARD. Scholz told Welt TV: “Everyone agrees that we will decide quickly on all these questions”.
However, decisions are not expected Monday. They are expected to be taken to the regular EU summit in late June.
