It is the only obstacle on the path of Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte to take over the post of secretary general of the military alliance.
Speaking in Bucharest on 19 June, after a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattella, Iohannis said he would first talk about his decision with Romania's Supreme National Defence Council and then make it public.
Earlier in the day, Hungary and Slovakia said they would back Rutten, leaving Romania alone among 32 NATO member states that have not backed the 57-year Dutch leader.
