Bulgaria warns it will reconsider support for Serbia's EU membership

Bulgaria's president, Rumen Radev, has hinted that Sofia could reassess support for the Western Balkan region's membership in the European Union (BE), especially when it comes to Serbia, mainly because of the way Bulgarian minority is treated by Belgrade. “Bulgaria is the main engine of European integration of Balkan countries [...]
“Bulgaria is the main engine of European integration of the Western Balkan countries, because we are aware of how important this integration is to the security, stability and sustainable economic development of the region, but we stand firm in the principle of our merits in this integration process so that it is sustainable and irreversible”.
The key criteria we will judge with and give support to the progress of the Western Balkan countries is exactly the condition of our fellow countrymen in every country, their conditions for economic and social development, and above all, their ability to protect their national identity, language, culture and historical memory”, has added Radev.
Otherwise, the Bulgarian state remains in the same position as in northern Macedonia. Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia in June 2022 accepted “French proposal” for resolving disputes over the language issue, identity and historical differences, referring to the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority in the preamble of the Northern Macedonia Constitution.
