Biden said that on the ceasefire, international leaders have discussed the G7 summit in Italy, but when asked by journalists whether a ceasefire agreement will be reached soon, he simply replied “jo”.
“I have not lost hope”, he added.
Earlier Thursday, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan dismissed claims that Israel is not fully committed to the ceasefire plan.
“Israel has given this proposal. He's been sitting on the table for a while. Israel has not opposed and has not turned it back”, Sullivan said.
Hamas has responded to the plan with calls for changes, and Sullivan said the goal is “to understand how to work on overcoming the remaining gaps and reaching a” agreement.
Hamas says the required changes are intended to guarantee a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The ceasefire proposal, proclaimed by Beden, includes these provisions.
The UN Security Council approved a resolution Monday to support the United States proposal, with 14 votes to and none against it. Russia abstained.
The American president's proposal, Joe Biden, includes three phases to end the war on the Gaza Strip.
The first phase includes a six-week ceasefire, during which Israeli forces would withdraw from “all the residential areas“of Gaza, some elderly hostages and women dealt with relief in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners; Palestinian civilians would return to their homes in Gaza; and 600 trucks would daily send humanitarian aid to the ruined enclave.
In the second phase, all living hostages, including soldiers, would be exchanged; Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza and the permanent ceasefire would begin.
The third phase envisions a major reconstruction plan for Gaza, as well as the return of the latest “future hostages to their families.
Israel started the war by vowing to destroy Hamas after the radical Palestinian group killed about 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and seized over 250 others during the October 7th attack in southern Israel.
More than 100 hostages were released during a week-long ceasefire in November, in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel./Rel/
