The special prosecutor of the Republic of Kosovo has reacted sharply to former Prime Minister Kurti's statements concerning war crimes cases.

In response, Kurti's comments are said to be in full opposition to the constitutional principles of separation of powers and international standards for the independence of the Judiciary.

The special prosecutor of the Republic of Kosovo expresses deep indignation at Prime Minister Kurti's continued non-productive approach to the Special Prosecutor of the Republic of Kosovo over war crimes cases.

The Special Prosecutor strongly points out that Kosovo's prime minister's continued comments on the work of the Special Prosecutor are in full opposition to the constitutional principles of the division of powers and international standards for Judiciary independence. So, as such, they undermine public confidence in the work of the State Attorney in general and the Special Prosecutor in particular.

The Special Prosecutor of the Republic of Kosovo announces the public opinion that in the past five years, since this prosecutor has received competencies for investigating war crimes, he has done extremely great work in full co-operation with implementing law institutions. Moreover, this has been done with insufficient framework, professional and financial capacities as a result of insufficient budgets. The KKP brings to the attention of public opinion that in the past 20 years, full budgetary requirements (at 100% demand altitude) have never been adopted.
Also, the legal framework for investigating war crimes has changed greatly in the past five years.

This change has presented a challenge to an effective and effective process in investigating war crimes. This challenge is not shared by other countries in the region. States like Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have adopted national strategies at the level of their countries' governments and parliaments to address war crimes. We still don't have such a strategy at the national level.
Despite that, at the initiative of the Special Prosecutor of the Republic of Kosovo, the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council has approved the War Crimes Strategy, on which war crimes investigations are under way.

Even with these insufficient resources -- both legal and financial -- we announce the public opinion that the Special Prosecutor, currently, has a total of 60 counts of war crimes for 56 cases, against 165 people.

We also inform you that there has been an end to proceeding with the prosecution's progress, by the Prosecutor's Council, and starting on June 1st 2024, at the Department for Investigation of War Crimes in the Special Prosecutors will be added to two (2) prosecutors, where the total number of prosecutors in this department will be five (5), who will deal exclusively with the investigation of war crimes.

The Special Prosecutor called on the prime minister and any other state official to avoid public statements that do not coincide with the real situation and invite citizens for co-operation with the law bodies so that all individuals who committed criminal war crimes are brought to justice.
War crimes are not recorded, so we will not stop working on all the cases we have related to these criminal acts” is said in response.
