German diplomacy chief Annalena Baerbock made it clear before MPs that Germany strongly supports Kosovo in the process.
I am grateful for the intensive work of German deputies. I call on all involved and Kosovo to do everything in their power to achieve the necessary majority for membership as soon as possible”, the German diplomat said.
Even more intense was German MP from the CSU ranks, Knut Abraham.
He called on the German government to make a final decision in favour of Kosovo.
According to Abraham, even if Kosovo does not enter the agenda tomorrow, the Committee of Ministers must meet again during June to postpone the process.
“It is progress that the Government of Kosovo will hand over a statute for the Association of Serb majority municipalities to the Constitutional Court by the end of May. Kosovo's initiative should be assessed because to do so, you must have political will and vision. Now the situation remains unclear for tomorrow, however, even if Kosovo is not included in the agenda, then in the very near future the Committee of Ministers must meet again to postpone the process. Farther away in June should be a meeting for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe”, he has said.
The German politician also considers Kosovo being treated unjustly because, he says, the Association was never a criterion for membership in the Council of Europe.
The “on my opinion is unfair that Kosovo was asked at this stage as an additional condition for membership in the Council of Europe. The Parliamentary Assembly has made it very clear that Kosovo meets all the conditions for membership in this organisation. It's really sad how Kosovo is being treated. Now we have a historic moment ahead of us to support Kosovo, and we have to do this”, he said to 1.
During the day, the German Embassy in Pristina told television that Kosovo had to submit the draft state to the establishment of the Association of Serb majority municipalities to the Constitutional Court before the meeting of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers.
