“We are still hopeful, but the information coming from the crash site is very disturbing”, the official told Reuters.
Iranian President and Foreign Minister, along with several other officials, were on the helicopter board, returning from a ceremony to open a dam on Iran's border with Azerbaijan when the plane “crashed during the landing in the Varzakan region on Sunday”, reported IRNA English.
According to the agency, 20 rescue teams and fears have been sent to the area where the helicopter is believed to have crashed, but due to dense fog and mountainous terrain, the search-saving operation will take some time.
The IRNA also reported, citing local residents, that the helicopter crashed in the Dizmar Forest area between the villages of Oz and Pir Davwood. Residents said they heard noises from the area.
Iran's Interior Minister Ahmad Vahid said that one of the helicopters in a column was forced to make a difficult decline due to fog weather conditions.
Vex0> Now various rescue groups are moving towards the area, but given that there is fog and weather and inadequate conditions, it may take some time to get to where the helicopter” is, Vahid said.
He added he had some contact with passengers on the helicopter, but there were no other details.
