Former president of the Spanish region of Catalonia, Charles Puigdemont, has criticised this Friday's decision by the Spanish government to recognise the Palestinian state.
He has questioned the government's decision led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, recalling that Spain has not recognised Kosovo and in this form the Spanish state is following “double standards”
In a video published on the X platform, Puigdemont points out that the Spanish government announces “in the midst of an armed conflict that is shaking the world” and “may seem to have now become a protector of the right to self-set peoples as a mechanism for resolving conflicts”.
A stance that the Catalan subx0s have always protected”, says the pro-independence leader of Catalonia. But, that is not so, the 61-year-old adds, remembering that the Spanish state “is one of the few European countries” that still does not recognise Kosovo's independence.
“does not recognise the right to Kosovo Europeans to decide freely for their future, despite the European Union already has diplomatic relations with them”, he says.
Puigdemont claims that the Palestinian people have the right to self-rule as the people of Catalonia”.
Otherwise, Puigdemont lives in Belgium because it is required of the Spanish justice for organising Catalonia's independence referendum in 2017.
