US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday defended a decision to prevent the sending of 3,500 bombs to Israel because of concerns they could be used in the town of Rafah of Gaza, saying Israel lacked a reliable “plan to protect about 1.4 million civilians sheltered there.
Speaking to ABC News this week, Blinken said President Joe Biden remained committed to helping Israel defend and that the shipment of 3,500 bombs was the only American arms package that was banned.
That could change, he said, if Israel launches a full-scale attack on Rafah, which Israel says plans to invade to eradicate the militant group Hamas' men in power.
Beden has made it clear to Israel that if he starts this huge military operation in Rafah, then there are several systems we will not support and supply for that operation,” said Blinken.
“We have real concerns about how they are used,” he continued. Israel must “have a clear and reliable plan to protect civilians, which we have not seen”, Reuters writes.
