The United States is preparing a new military aid package, worth $400m, for Ukraine, which has faced trouble to repel Russian troops in the northeast region of Harkiv.
This package includes artillery, rocket launcher NASAM and ammunition for it, anti-tank ammunition, autobuldes and small arms that can be used immediately on the battlefield.
The US announcement comes just a day after Russian forces launched a ground offensive Friday near Ukraine's second largest city, Harkiv, in the northeast of the country.
Russian forces marked small progress in Harkiv and opened a new front in a long-standing war in the east and south.
The US has given Ukraine military assistance worth about $50 billion, since Russia began its invasion in February 2022.
On Thursday, Germany's Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, said three other high-speed artillery rocket systems, HIMARS, will be sent to Ukraine by its Western allies.
Similarly, Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said his country could stop Russian forces from advancing to the east if allies increase weapons supplies.
On Saturday, Zelensky said a “severe battle” was taking place in Harkiv, from which hundreds of Ukrainians were evacuated.
The Harkiwi region has been largely under Ukraine's control since September 2022.
But, in recent months, Russia has intensified attacks with fears and rockets in this region and its capital, while Ukrainian forces are facing a lack of ammunition and air defence systems. / REL/
