Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, has indicated yesterday that there were reactions to blocking Kosovo's citizens and stopping several police officers across Serbia's border points, a day after Kosovo passed successfully even a phase towards membership in the Council of Europe.
He complained the US is talking about the “arrests of Serbs” in Kosovo, while what happened in Serbia, according to him, no one remained without reaction.
There's no one who hasn't reacted, State Department announcement, Germans, EULEX, all possible. For ten months and three hundred days, all goods that must go from Serbia to Kosovo have been blocked. Neither of you has issued a statement”, Vuciq said, spreading propaganda for “the removal of a Serbian citizen in custody.
Today, this statement was answered by US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia James O'Brien at a news conference after meeting with Vucinqi.
He said everyone makes their own choices whether to respond publicly or privately.
Two things come to mind about the arrests on both sides of the border. We all make the choice of what we do publicly and what we do privately, that is the essence of diplomacy and politics where the president is good at such conversations. The choice we made last weekend in connection with the arrest was to discuss the matter privately, to discuss it openly, and it was helpful. The president raised another concern, we will think about it, we will work on everything the president mentioned. Our task is to fulfill our promise, which is to see people treated well while they're in custody and we'll make sure it's this way”.
