Kosovo police on Tuesday have asked citizens to provide information about Gjakova, who is on the run.
Reuters article:
Kosovo police have sought public assistance in finding Judo sport Akil Gjakova, who is accused of domestic violence, police said Tuesday.
Kosovo's “Police are looking to all citizens who have information on the suspect's whereabouts to call the nearest police station”, said the police communiqué along with Gjakova's photo, without providing more information on the charges. Local media said earlier that his wife had made a statement to the police.
Gjakova, 28, has won 62 medals in judo, including six gold medals since 2011 in different international competitions and was scheduled to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Kosovo Federation of Judo said it had been in contact with Gjakova and believed in his innocence, saying he was abroad and would surrender to authorities when he returned.
Gjakova's arrest warrant came after the small Balkan country was shocked when a man killed his wife Tuesday, shortly after another childicide last Friday, when a husband killed his ex-wife.
The country's President Vjosa Osmani announced days of mourning Wednesday.
