EU foreign policy spokeswoman Nabila Masrali has expressed regret over the Serbian List's decision not to participate in the scheduled April 21st vote in four northern municipalities.
What we can say is that we express regret for the Serbian List's decision not to participate in the vote scheduled for April 21st in the four northern municipalities. This comes after their previous boycott of April 2023 local elections in northern Kosovo”, she said.
According to her, although April 2023 local elections were held in line with the Kosovo legal framework, they did not offer a long-term political solution, as the Kosovo Serb boycott resulted in a very low overall turnout.
“We took into account concerns expressed by Kosovo Serbs about the process enabling new local elections. However, we call on the Serbian List to reconsider the decision not to participate, as democracy has to do with Kosovo's Serb participation and electorate and exploit their rights and express their political opinion in the box of voting”, Massrali said.
EU spokeswoman Nabila Masrali stressed that the EU remembers it is critical that the comprehensive local elections in which Kosovo Serbs are participating unconditionally and are held in all four municipalities in northern Kosovo.
The holding of new mayoral elections would ensure a full representation of local government in the north and would help us de-proportionate, while repeat voting is a step in this direction”, said EU spokeswoman Nabila Massrali.
