Germany's Transport Minister is threatening to ban weekend driving to meet climate goals if the ruling coalition does not pass reforms at the Climate Protection Act by July.
“The fact that the amendment is not yet in force leads to considerable legal and actual uncertainty”, liberal politician Volker Wissing wrote in a letter to leaders of the coalition parliamentary groups, the German newspaper BILD reported on Thursday, writes Foreign media.
This serves neither the climate nor the reputation of the federal government”, he said.
And a reduction in traffic to help meet climate goals would only be possible through measures that are difficult to communicate with the public, such as the cross-border and indefinite halting of the driving of Saturdays and Sundays”, Wissing added.
If the planned reforms are not passed by parliament by July 15th, Wisssing, the Ministry for Digitalisation and Transport will be forced to submit a “immediate action programme that ensures compliance with annual levels of transport sector emissions” by 2030, which will include preventing vehicle direction on weekends.
Otherwise, the highway's speed limit is a controversial debate in Germany.
But in early April, Wissing stressed that the government is not seeking to implement a speed limit on highways.
