According to them, the fate of 15 others is unknown.

Malta authorities sought Italy's help Wednesday following the shipwreck of the ship about 30 miles [50 km] southeast of the island of Lampedusa.

The Italian Coast Guard announced that it has sent a team to the scene, saving 22 people.

It also points out that the bodies of the nine victims have already been found (between them one baby).

It is known that the rescue operation was difficult because of bad weather and severe conditions in the area, with waves reaching a height of up to 2,000 feet [2.5 m].

The national prosperity of the ships is not yet known, but the island of Lampedusa, which lies in the Mediterranean between Tunisia, Malta and the Italian island of Sicily, is the first port for many migrants intended to go to European Union countries.

An Italian coast guard plane is watching the area around the shipwreck for others whose fate is unknown.
