Asked whether Borut Pahor would be a good substitute for Miroslav Lajcak, she said former Slovenia president is a key “player” in what will happen between the EU and the Western Balkans.
She declared that she deeply respects Lajcak and that he has done “an amazing task”.
I come from a country that is no longer in the EU and cannot interfere with that discussion. It is up to the EU to decide who will replace Lajcak. I have the highest respect for Pahor. He's done an important job. Whatever is decided, he is an important player in what will happen between the EU and the Western Balkans”, Ashton told “Kosovo Online”.
Ashton, according to the Slovenian newspaper Delo, is among the people who are conducting part of the lobby to make Pahor EU envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
Pahor has openly demonstrated his intention to succeed Lajcak in the task of mediating the difficult dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, while Lajcak has said his replacement could be resolved before the end of August, when the mandate ends as well.
Miroslav Lajcak will likely be the new European Union ambassador to Switzerland from September 1st, succeeding Greek Petros Mavromichalis, who will return to Brussels after four years in the post.
After European elections to be held in June, it will also be decided who will be the new chief of European diplomacy, which will succeed Josep Borrell.
